Our vision of public health
features-1
Across many developed countries, populations are rapidly aging. In Japan, average life expectancy has increased by nearly 20 years over the past half century. At the same time, a gap of more than ten years remains between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy, making the reduction of this gap one of the most critical challenges facing contemporary society. In today’s healthcare landscape, it is increasingly recognized as a new standard that curative medicine—aimed at treating and curing disease in individual patients—and preventive medicine—focused on preventing disease onset and progression at the population level—must function as two complementary pillars. The academic field that assumes primary responsibility for the latter perspective is what we refer to as Social Health Medicine. At Shizuoka Graduate University of Public Health, we cultivate the capacity to address societal health challenges through comprehensive education that encompasses the five internationally recognized core fields of public health, together with a broad range of related and interdisciplinary fields.
Five Core Fields of Public Health
Epidemiology
Students study epidemiological theory and methods, including cohort studies and genomic epidemiology, to develop the ability to scientifically identify the determinants of disease.
Medical statistics
Students acquire skills to accurately analyze medical and health-related data and to interpret and apply research findings.
Environmental health science
Students evaluate the impact of environmental factors—such as natural and occupational environments—on health and examine risk management and preventive strategies using scientific approaches.
Behavioral medicine and health communication
Students learn theories of health behavior and communication and explore intervention strategies using nudges and social marketing.
Health management and policy
Students develop practical skills for designing and implementing health policies tailored to regional needs, using health screening and clinical data.
Degrees Offered
The university offers both master’s and doctoral programs, through which students progressively deepen their expertise at each stage of study and are ultimately trained to become professionals in public health.

Master’s Program in Public Health
Standard program duration: 2 years
features-2-1
Students who complete the Master’s Program in Public Health are awarded the degree of Master of Public Health (MPH). As public health is an inherently interdisciplinary field, our program welcomes applicants from a wide range of undergraduate backgrounds, as well as working professionals, and provides them with advanced knowledge and skills in public health that are internationally relevant. The MPH program we offer attracts not only graduates of six-year professional programs such as medicine, but also individuals who already hold doctoral degrees. Many enroll in the program in order to acquire the knowledge and perspectives necessary to protect and promote health from a broad, population-based viewpoint that extends beyond their original areas of specialization.
Doctoral Program in Public Health
Standard program duration: 3 years
features-2-2
Students who complete the Doctoral Program in Public Health are awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health. The program cultivates scholars and leaders who can propose evidence-based solutions to complex public health challenges, implement them in society, and lead education and research in public health with a high level of academic rigor, leadership, and ethical responsibility.
